Hello, World!
Last Saturday, I felt like I was getting a bit of a sore throat. No big deal. We'd just gotten back from a long trip. It was cold, and I was adjusting to time and altitude. A little sore throat might be expected.
I medicated - aspirin, alka seltzer cold plus (my go-to) and went to bed. On Sunday the soreness persisted. I upped my water and continued with OTC meds. But by Sunday night, I felt worse instead of better and suggested that we just order some Chinese rather than cook something.
Six hours later I was retching, hacking, and dry heaving the last of the honey shrimp to the porcelain gods. My throat was raging. My body wracked. I finally pulled my sweaty self back into bed and stayed there until TUESDAY morning.
In the meantime, two things happened: Joe was convinced he should take me to the ER, but instead did the sane thing and got me a doctor's appointment Tuesday afternoon; and the bacteria, acid, and already rawness of my throat combined to petri-dish my ass into a massive infection that threatened to close off my windpipe. I was sick. So fucking sick.
The doctor was so concerned she called in her partner for a consult. She ultimately sent me to a specialist in the building, who, upon scoping up my nose in order to look down onto my epiglottis, simply said, "Wow!"
She thought about putting me in the hospital, but felt that we could halt the infection before it cut off my air. She put me on Amoxicillin, Prednisone, and Hydrocodone - all in liquid form because I couldn't swallow. Couldn't talk. Almost couldn't breathe.
For the next three days, I crawled back to being able to sit up, to being able to whisper/talk as if I were on helium, to being able to drink a Slimfast. And then the bounce back accelerated. I'm pretty much back to normal.
I still have a few days of antibiotics, and I still have a little catch in my swallow, but I'm so much better. In the past week I've lost about 7 lbs. - who wouldn't after ingesting only about 3,000 calories in six days? I'm well enough to post, and I'm was well enough to yell at the Titans last night during their drubbing by the Pats. Fucking Pats.
Anyway, I'm back. Hello, world!
